Raymond Singer, M.D., F.A.C.S., Chief, Thoracic Surgery
“Senior management encourages, rewards and even honors physicians for participating in professional activities outside the hospital.”
Being elected president of the Pennsylvania Association for Thoracic Surgery was a professional honor for Raymond Singer, M.D. It was the first time a cardio-thoracic surgeon in the Lehigh Valley was elected president of the association. But Singer, one of the busiest and most innovative cardio-thoracic surgeons in the country, says the honor spoke volumes about Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network.
"Senior management encourages, rewards and even honors physicians for participating in activities such as this," Singer says. "They support us whether it's in a professional association or in the operating room. I've visited some of the most prestigious hospitals in the world, and our facilities are the finest I've ever seen anywhere. We work in an environment where innovation can thrive."
As a cardiac surgeon, Singer performs minimally invasive surgeries and complex valve surgeries, including homografts, valve repair, complex aortic aneurysm surgery and aortic dissections. "We've become a center for excellence for complex valve surgery," he says. "Even as patient acuity and the complexity of surgeries increases, we're reducing mortality rates."
Singer also introduces innovative thoracic surgeries to the region, from video-assisted fluoroscopy and lung volume reduction to rib-and-muscle-sparing thoracoscopic lobectomies. And he's in the forefront of lung cancer treatment, teaming up with a medical oncologist and radiation oncologist to offer a multidisciplinary care team.
"Our lung cancer team is another example of innovative thinking," he says. "We have the perfect combination of talented leadership and great foresight. As a busy surgeon, I can't ask for more."
